New telescopes lead to arugments of Gods’ existence. What do you think?

Aug 19, 2009 by

Naturally, I have a curiosity about science and space and time.  This morning I began reading yesterday's story on CNN.com about the new cool, very large telescopes that are due to come online in 2018 around the world that will be at least twice as large as the ones we have now, and the new telescope in space that will replace Hubble.

The article was straightforward and included much of the information I've been reading in Michael Brooks' 2005 book, 13 Things That Don't Make Sense and A Briefer History of Time by Stephen Hawking. The premise is that with these larger telescopes, we will be able to see deeper into space and perhaps see more aspects of our universe we did not know about.

What was more interesting, however, were the comments about what we might learn, and a discussion of the merits of The Big Bang, and then, the existence of God.  I had no idea that the premise of peering deeper into the mysteries of our universe would cause such a debate.  And the level of commentary is every bit as intense as the ongoing discussion over healthcare reform in America.

Jeremy wrote: I for one believe strongly that God
created the universe, but it may have been by way of big bang for all I know.
Let's learn all we can, both religiously and scientifically. The two can
complement one another when we aren't being childish about it.

Another comment from John included the following caution: Science
told us the world was flat…until someone discovered they were mistaken.
Science invented the chemicals and processes that we now realize are changing
the environment. Today's scientific discovery is tomorrows retraction. Just
like many "religious" people scientists are searching for
something… but be careful any theory can be proved on inaccurate data!

I don't know how the Universe was created but I'm
99.9999 percent sure that it wasn't the god from the bible or any of the other
books.
And then there's the otherIt's pathetic that so many people have the same
ignorant, credulous mentality that our ancient ancestors had. It's way past
time to throw away the nonsense of gods and other supernatural claptrap.
Seriously, in this day and age ,how can anyone be so stupid ? Are so many
people really that simpleminded or is it fear, or maybe a lifetime of
brainwashing ? I can't understand how or why people cling to the superstition
of gods, angels, devils …etc.

Wow.  There are tons more comments attached to this story some on either side of the argument, in a story where there wasn't an argument presented.

A couple of questions come to mind.

  1. In our history, do you believe our religious institutions have thwarted the study of science and our universe for some of the same reasons expressed above or in the body of comments posted on the CNN site?
  2. Personally, I'd like to see more space exploration take place in my life time.  I'd love to see mankind return to the moon and I'd like to see a manned mission to Mars before I pass away to the ages.  Do you think this is a wise expenditure of NASA or private funds?
  3. Do you as a parent, or do you believe that parents discourage their children not to persue careers in math and science because of their religious affiliations and beliefs?
  4. If you're still a student in school, have you ever felt pressure not to go into studying astronomy, science, physics, etc. because of your family's religious beliefs or your upbringing?
  5. Do you consider building these new massive telescopes around the world as a threat to regilious beliefs and practices?
  6. Please share your answers. There are no wrong answers.  Can we find answers to what happened billions and billions of years ago in studying the light waves that have been traveling across the universe for as long?
